The City of Sitka, Alaska, when it served as the territory's capitol during the Russian ownership of this “last frontier,” was known as “The Paris of the Northwest.” Your shore excursions at this historic and picturesque port of call might include a visit to the Raptor Center, a “hospital” that rehabilitates injured birds of prey and returns them to the wild, an introduction to the culture and heritage of the native Tlingit people through totems, tours and dance, and – because this city of 8,000 is right on the shores of the Pacific Ocean – lots of activities focused on the water. Predictable and excellent is the opportunity to go deep sea fishing for abundant salmon species – Kings among the most sought – powerful and tasty halibut, and a myriad of rockfish. Whale watching is truly awe-inspiring. Whether from sightseeing boats or your own personal kayak, you might make the acquaintance of sea otters or harbor seals. Kayaks can also take your on a tour of World War II history and installation remnants, as Alaska became a military barrier to the Japanese. Bald eagles, colorful puffins, durable sea birds and interesting tidal zone flora and fauna reveal a fascinating story of Southeast Alaska’s natural history in Sitka Sound and the Tongass National Forest.
