I don't know why your guide, Lois, drives around in a 1955 Chevy and listens to 50's music. I guess she just likes the car and the music. You'll like her because of her warmth, sincerity and knowledge of the local culture.

This tour first visits Saxman, a Tlingit Indian village, home of splendid totem poles in a park-like setting. As you stroll through the park your guide will explain the thriving Native culture and how the people lived in this awesome land long before the United States purchased Alaska.
Upon leaving the Totem Park at Saxman you'll drive to a gravel road where you'll find yourselves in the midst of the rainforest. You'll learn to identify the coniferous hemlock, spruce and cedar trees that have played important roles in our community's development. Your guide will also take you to an 'eagle tree': at the very top of this gigantic Sitka spruce is an aerie, as locals call it, or an eagle's nest. If you're lucky, an adult eagle may be perched on the edge of its huge nest. Or, perhaps a glimpse of an eaglet!
To round out your tour you'll poke into some of the nooks and crannies of Lois' special city-places where tour buses never roam, like a worn wooden plank street, one of Ketchikan's oldest, that yearns to reveal its history. All but forgotten, this rattling narrow plank street remains just as it was at the turn of the century...over the muddy tide flats, and ending in backyards.

Lois was such fun - not to mention riding around in her '55 Chevy. We enjoyed hearing all of her tidbits about Ketchikan - and her detailed explanation and history of the Saxman Totem Pole Village. We enjoyed the fact that it was just the five of us on the tour. We felt like we were visiting with an old friend.

We had so much fun! This tour was not offered by our cruise line. There's only four seats per tour - in our guide 1955 Red and White Chevy. She picked us up at the dock on time and took us on a tour of the Ketchikan Harbor, Totem Museum, and Totem Carving House. She shared so much interesting information about Alaska and Ketchikan, and even her personal stories of all the celebrities that have driven in her car. She made the tour a wonderful adventure and historical lesson. We also saw several eagles nests. A great time was had by all.

Our shoreTrip was outstanding. It was a customized trip without the customized cost. We got to see eagles and bears in the wild. Although we didn't go to the Totem Pole Park, our visit to the salmon hatchery and the rainforest were wonderful. I recommend this excursion for those who would truly enjoy learning about the culture and way of life in Ketchikan.

Our guide met us with her 55 Chevy right at the pier. I felt like I was meeting an old friend for the day. She was an exceptional guide and very knowledgeable about the area and everything involved. She kept us moving and interested and the time went all too fast. She is full of energy and enthusiasm about where she lives and made us very comfortable all morning long. She gave us a chocolate and a big hug when we left. We loved it!

We really enjoyed Lois and all her stories. She tailored the trip to us, gave us lots of information and introduction to local artists, and told us we could call on her for information later! She was lots of fun and knew everyone.

This tour was a highlight. We had a ball with the guide and she was very informative. She was so respectful to the other larger tours but seemed to have the inside scoop with the natives. I would recommend it to those that would like to see the "REAL Ketchikan" The price was reasonable and we had a super time.
