Sit back and relax while you enjoy the countryside during your ride of just short of 2 hours to Granada. Located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, Granada was the stronghold of the last great Moorish Kingdom in Spain, the Nasrid Dynasty. Although the entire historic city is filled with cultural treasures, its main attraction is the Alhambra Palace, a Moorish citadel that overlooks the city. Composed of a fortress (the Alcazaba), two halls of state, a series of luxury residences, a popular quarter, and, perched high on a nearby hillside, a country retreat (Generalife), when it was built Alhambra was one of the most lavish palaces that Spain had ever seen.
Our local guide - well trained and enthusiastic in the history and culture of this famous monument - will lead you through the Alhambra (“red castle”). Dating all the way back to the 14th century, this palace of sultans is one of the best examples of Islamic art in all the world. Tour the large courtyards and elegant halls, making your way past the fountains and ponds set in dazzling gardens. See the famous Hall of the Ambassadors, the Court of the Lions, and the Charles V Palace. Also visit the gardens of Generalife, the hunting lodge and country retreat where the rulers and their wives went to escape the turmoil of the palace.
As wonderful as this monument to the past is, our guide is equally important to the enjoyment of your day. Passionate about the area, our guide is one of few private English-speaking guides licensed to tour in Alhambra. When this portion of your tour is completed, you can continue on a historic walking tour of Granada if time allows. If you find yourself short on time, you may instead have the guide accompany you on a bus ride through the city.
The day is long so we have included a picnic lunch in the price of the tour. The lunch includes a fresh fruit salad, Spanish cheeses, jamon (cured ham) fresh baked breads, olives, and gazpacho.
No other monument gives such a vivid picture of what it was like to live in the heyday of Moorish culture in Spain.
