You will be treated just like Tom Hanks or Gene Hackman if you do this tour, as you will be following in their footsteps - rather, their bike tracks!

This is a tour so well-known that many hear about it without even knowing where to do it. There are two tours a day, but the sunrise tour is the most famous as it starts EARLY in the morning and allows you to watch the sun rise. The midday tours, for those of you not quite so daring, starts later and views the volcano crater. What you are really going to be doing is biking downhill for 28 miles along the side of a dormant volcano, yet you will be pedaling for only 400 yards.
What you are really going to be doing is biking downhill for 28 miles along the side of a dormant volcano, yet you will be pedaling for only 400 yards.
You will be picked up and transported by a van to Haleakala National Park where you will witness the spectacle of Sunrise at 10,023 ft. over the Haleakala crater.
This enormous crater is 21 miles in circumference, 3000 feet deep and is large enough to fit Manhattan Island within. If you take the Sunrise tour, you will see one of the most spectacular solar displays found anywhere. You will reboard the vehicles and descend to 6500 feet where you'll board you bikes. You will be fitted with a helmet, windbreaker jacket, pants and gloves and you will ride custom-built mountain bicycles. Each group follows a lead guide in radio contact with the chase van. Many stops are made on the way down, including places you will be able to purchase breakfast or lunch.
This all sounds a bit dangerous so it was our job to find the BEST company for the job and we did just that. We found the originators!
Please note, though, that as romantic as this tour sounds, it is not for novices. You should be an experience biker to handle the switchbacks, which are extensive at the beginning of the trip.

Once at the bottom the experience takes on a somewhat surreal quality as your mind keeps replaying the constant series of turns and roadways that led to your final destination. One glance up at the top and you realize that you've conquered a mountain. You've connected with Maui in some way that you know is different. You smelled the camphor of the eucalyptus trees as you passed through the forests and you breathed the cool thin air from Maui's hightest slopes. Today was a different day for you. And it was worthwhile.

| The Sunrise Haleakala Bike Tour was awesome! Our guides were very knowledgable about the island but had great personalities which made the tour that much more fun. Watching the sunrise from above the clouds is something that is very hard to put in words and all I can say is you have to experience it for yourself! I am a travel agent and I would definitely recommend this excursion/Shore Trips to my clients! |
