Mangalore's development can be traced to it's location on the Arabian Sea as an important port city, the influence of which is still prevalent today. Mangalore is one of India's 'off the beaten' path destinations, renowned as a relaxed coastal town with old world charm. With its narrow, winding streets fringed with coconut palms, quaint houses with terracotta tiled roofs, beautiful beaches, temples, churches, and the aroma of spicy coconut curries, Mangalore is sure to win you over!

Cities are defined by their bazaars or market places and our first stop will be at the Hampankatta market, located in the heart of Mangalore. Lose yourself as you meander the streets and bylanes, passing shops of varying sizes. This is a living, bustling market so please be prepared for chaos and disorder!

Next up you will visit an Artisan village, where locals work to create clay pottery as well as wood and stone carvings. If you're feeling creative, try your hand at the wheel!

Your last stop before lunch will be at a Guthu Mane or a ‘home of prestige’. These traditional manor houses were built to fit the requirements of matrilineal joint families and symbolized the wealth and prestige of landlords. They are built following the principles of ‘Vastu’, the Indian equivalent of Feng Shui. Care was taken to ensure that the houses not only evoked grandeur but also suppressed the often oppressive heat and humidity of the region.

After lunch, you will visit the Gokarnath temple, where the presiding diety is a form of Shiva (the Destroyer and one of the Hindu triumvirates; the other two being, Brahma, the Creator and Vishnu, the Preserver). The temple has a Gopuram (tower like structure) decorated with murals of various gods and goddesses from the Hindu pantheon.

Mangalore was once a major seaport and shipbuilding center, and remains a major exporter of coffee, spices, and cashews. On your way back to the cruise pier you will stop at a Cashew Factory to watch the cleaning, sorting and packing processes.

This all encompassing tour will introduce you to the past and present of Mangalore!
