The old town of Batavia which is now known as Kota was once the home of the Dutch colonial Indonesia which now provides an unique mix of culture between the locals and former colonial era. The Sunda Kelapa or Pasar Ikan (Fish Market) located on the far north side of the city and is a labyrinth of sights, sounds and smells that will have your senses drifting from place to place. Busy crowds and quiet streets set the tone for a colorful scene that will allow you to look at the day's catch and other crafts local vendors sell on a daily basis. Look toward the harbor to see tall masted schooners from South Sulawesi anchoring at one of the most picturesque points in the city.

The National Museum on the west side of Meredeka Square represents the best chance to dive into the history of Indonesia. Established as early as 1778, it offers historical, pre-historical, archaeological and ethnographic examples of Indonesia through a large collection of relics covering times as far back as the Han, Tan and Ming Dynasties. From the National Museum to the National Monument you will take in the tribute to the struggle of the Indonesians rebelling against colonial domination. The top is shaped like a flame to symbolize the spirit of the locals that will continue to burn.
