ShoreTrips says...

Taxco (pronounced Tas'ko), the capitol of the Mexican state of Guerrero, is a beautiful colonial town, famous for its fine silver work. This is a full-day trip which will take you to the silver shops, as well as to other interesting architectural and historical places.

If silver is your thing--jewelry, tea sets, silverware, candelabras, and made-to-your-order custom pieces--Taxco, in the State of Guerrero, some 3 ½ hours east of Acapulco, is truly wonderful.

The staple of business and culture in this town for centuries, Taxco is known as Mexico’s silver capital.

While mining has been diminished in recent years, the charm and history of this enclave of artisans and craftsmen is intact and fascinating, as is Taxco itself. The city, high on a hill among hills, offers views of the high desert that are as breathtaking as the silver treasures on display throughout the city, in upscale showrooms, quaint markets, and one-man factories. Hilly, narrow cobblestone streets flank the larger, flat, central part of the city.

Your walking tour may also stop at Santa Prisca Church, an excellent example of baroque architecture, but the highlight is really the hundreds (literally, and some say up to 900) places to view and buy silver objets d’art. In the course of your personal walking tour, you’ll also discover quaint plazas, very good restaurants (cost of lunch is not included in the tour), and thoroughly enjoyable local people.

With memories of Taxco artisans and their wares fresh in your mind, and probably some fine silver keepsakes in your possession, your luxury air-conditioned van plies the highway back home. Along the way, majestic mountain views, glistening green agricultural plots, and landmarks such as the Valley of Candelabros and its Buzzard Canyon put the cap on a lovely day.

I found the place that Tiffany uses to make their silver pieces. Although the ones I bought did not come in the famous blue boxes, there was no other way to tell that they were not purchased on 5th Avenue!
