ShoreTrips says...
On our first visit to St. Petersburg we stopped at a workshop where we sat with children and painted a set of dolls. We still have them and seeing them brings back that wonderful very Russian experience.
The matryoshka doll is a symbol of Russia and its culture. It is truly a doll—a child's plaything—but it began its history just over 100 years ago as a highly collectible art form. The matryoshka doll is a nested doll with two halves that can be pulled apart. The outer figure contains increasingly smaller versions of itself. The painted image on the dolls is most often a woman wearing traditional Russian costume. The woman is a mother; the names Matryona and Matryoshka were common Russian country names for generations. During your visit to Russia, you will see a great variety of Matryoshka dolls with themes that are family-oriented, some very political, and then there are those based on celebrities. All of this is a fun way to combine tradition with today's reality.
We will visit a very family-friendly doll workshop where you will hear a short history of the Matryoshka doll before you begin to paint your fantasy. It is fun to see, in the end, how the set meshes together considering your group will each have their own doll. All materials are supplied and you will be able to take your doll home, a very personlized memento of St. Petersburg.
