ShoreTrips says...

Istria itself sounds so foreign and exciting. We know what to expect from Italy and France but not from this area of the world. Istria is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea and is located at the head of the Adriatic between the Gulf of Trieste and the Kvarner Gulf. It is shared by Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy.

The town of Koper, Slovenia, greets you upon your arrival. Koper is a lovely seaside hub with a picturesque old city core and quaint villages on its outskirts. It has much of the medieval layout as many of the small towns in the Mediterranean, with colorful buildings lining narrow streets. What is wonderful is its easy access to small villages that can deliver even more of an insight into the lives here and the way they have changed as well as remained the same, in a comfortable way.

This excursion will open your eyes and many doors into the sophisticated level of food that has long been part of this culture. Three villages will be introduced to you, each with its own cultural and historic attractions. Istrian cuisine is a reflection of the climatic, geographical and historical wonders of the area and in each village, culinary traditions will be combined with indigenous plants, aromatic spices, and seasonal foods.

Our first visit is to the village of Hum, laying its claim as the smallest town in the world. Located in the heart of Istria, Hum claims to have only 20 residents, all of whom warmly welcome visitors. Other than its diminutive size, this peaceful fairy tale town has recently become known for producing biska, a spiced brandy made with mistletoe, using a traditional recipe. Of course, we'll taste a sample of this very local specialty.

We proceed to our next destination, Motovun, located high above the Mirna River. Often thought the most attractive and famous of the medieval towns on the peninsula, it holds attractions such as St. Stephen's 17th century parish church, a 13th century Romanesque-Gothic bell tower, and a center square surrounded by history. Both white and black truffles are prominent in this area and so are some of their local wines such as their Muscat of Momjan and Malvasia. Expect to taste truffles, local olive oil and wine among other products on your tour through Motovun.

The town of Groznjan, our next stop, is a place like no other. The "treasure trove" of Istria, Groznjan's riches include ancient churches, prehistoric sites and Medieval castles, all carefully restored to their original glory, accompanied by a fascinating history. In addition, this charming town's creative spirit has drawn national and international artists and musicians, with jazz and classical performances enriching the summer months. And we haven't even mentioned Groznjan's agricultural treasures. Its white soil, rich in nutrients, feeds the many nearby vineyards, fruit orchards and olive groves with community taverns and restaurants highlighting the local cuisine. We'll tour a local wine cellar and possibly pay a visit to the nearby vineyards.
