ShoreTrips says...
What is it? Majorca or Mallorca? The answer is, both are right! Majorca is Catalan and Mallorca is Spanish.
This half day tour will take us on a beautiful panoramic tour of the most important historical and cultural points of the city.
We'll start off by driving along the picturesque coast, viewing many different architectural styles of the area. From here we'll head to one of Mallorca's most important medieval monuments, the Bellver Castle. This massive Gothic fortification provides stunning views of the city and port below.
Leaving the city behind for a bit we'll venture through the Spanish countryside to the village of Valldemossa. Nestled in a valley of the Tramuntana Mountains, this beautiful village exudes old-world charm with narrow cobblestone streets, artist galleries, cafes and ancient stone houses whose doorways are bursting with colorful blooms. Our guide will show us around and then provide time for strolling the picturesque streets.
Nearby is La Cartuja, a monastery where Chopin spent one winter, composing Preludes and Scherzos during that time. We'll tour the property including the church, pharmacy and cells and be treated to a 10 minute live piano recital.
We head back to the city to experience Palma on foot. The city's compact downtown makes it the perfect place for a walking tour. We'll see Palma Cathedral, the imposing Almudaina Palace and La Lonja, the city's historic stock exchange building.
Our guide will relate the fascinating history of Mallorca's Jewish community as we discover Palma's Jewish Quarter. We'll hear about the ebbs and flows of their numbers and (at times) their strong political and economic impact on the city and the island.
Undoubtedly, the most distinguishing feature of Palma's seafront is the magnificent La Seu Cathedral. This massive edifice rises high above the ancient city walls, its golden sandstone exterior beautifully reflecting the sunlight. If you wish, you have the option to view the awe-inspiring interior with its soaring arches, brilliant stained glass rose windows and lighting designed by Gaudi.
Your driver will return to you the cruise ship pier at the end of this wonderful tour.
