ShoreTrips says...

The short ride from the port of La Goulette into the center of Tunis will give you a chance to hear an introduction to the city and its history. Tunisia played important roles in ancient history since the days of the Phoenicians in Carthage and then what is known as the province of Africa during the reign of the Romans. Today Tunisia is an export-oriented country, in the process of liberalizing its economy.

Tunisia has undergone rapid modernization efforts, today's Tunis is a city ready to step to the forefront of the global stage.

The capital of Tunis is made up of three towns, all linked. The Medina, the old city, is the landmark and the heart of Tunis. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Medina consists of spectacular historical monuments, palaces and mosques.

The main street in the New City area of Tunis, Ville Nouvelle, is the palm-fringed Habib Bourguiba Avenue with many cafeterias and restaurants. This is an ideal place for watching the hustle and bustle of the city. The third, European town, was built around the turn of the 20th century and evokes the flavor of the influence from its northern continent.

We'll stop at the Bardo Museum with its Tunisian art such as colorful mosaics and pottery can be admired here in this beautiful building which was originally a palace built in the 13th century.

Become more acquainted with Medina and its souqs. Colorful souqs are open markets located in the old city. They are the major places for shopping in Tunis and perfect places for practicing your skills in bargaining. There are numerous street vendors in the narrow streets of the Old city selling books, dried fruits, perfumes, clothes, antiques, jewelry, carpets and much more!
