ShoreTrips says...

We always feel that a trip to Alaska should include something you never did before! And this, kayaking on Mendenhall Lake, is definitely one of those!

For some, kayaking is a hobby at home. For others, the chance to kayak has been long in coming. For both, the pleasure that one receives on the water's surface is immeasurable. Kayaking is safe and also comfortable and you will see, if you are a novice, that you are in control from the first movement of your paddle.

Now what is more important is where you will be kayaking. The permits to kayak on Mendenhall Lake are very limited so feel lucky if this is possible. To start, your arrival at the edge of the waterfront will be met with exuberant guides who want to help. You will be outfitted with a life jacket and rain gear and then you will receive some instruction on proper techniques. This adventure requires NO past experience and you will not be alone in your kayak but sharing with either your traveling companion or you will be making a new friend. Your guide will make sure that you, if you are a first-timer, will be among others that will keep the same pace. That allows you piece of mind while you take in the beauty around you.

As you begin your safari-style journey across the lake, you will feel the stability of your kayak. Navigating the iceberg studded waters will come easy and you will be gaining confidence with every turn of your paddle. The water is pristine here and also you will most likely find the surface almost like glass. The Mendenhall Lake is part of the Tongass National Forest which will, or has already, followed you through Alaska.

Your guide will be so familiar with the daily changes on the lake that every scene of wildlife will be pointed out to you. Nature surrounds you with the native plants and the history that accompanies them. Every season brings a new background and your guide will know if there is something different each day to see. The ecology of the Mendenhall Glacier is most interesting as it is receding, like glaciers around the world, yet it still feels powerful as you get close to the massive face of the glacier. Most likely you will have reached Nugget Falls at this point, with the amazing power of that waterfall.

As you paddle back across the lake, you can take your last look at this extraordinary scene, which will stay with you long after your visit. These are the experiences of the real Alaska, where you are using your own manpower to move close to a miracle of nature.
