ShoreTrips says...

Loved loved this pepper. The week we left for Cambodia Time Magazine did an article on this town and its special peppers. I was obsessed (still am!).

Step into a comfortable vehicle and enjoy a 1.5 hour drive along the Gulf of Thailand to Kampot, one of Cambodia’s most attractive towns. The route passes stunning scenery with the Damrei (Elephant) Mountains as a constant backdrop and several stretched paddy fields along the way. The driver and guide will select stops for pictures and stretching the legs on the way.

Upon arrival in Kampot, meet with your specialized escort for the day. Join him for a walk around Kampot and observe the beautiful riverfront with its colonial shop-houses, the authentic central market and large range of French colonial villa’s that are still standing impressive as ever.

Lunch is served at a local restaurant before you continue to Kep, which is a small fishing village and has grown into a very attractive small retreat for Phnom Penh residents over the years. The anthropologist is still with you and will lead you to one of Cambodia’s finest pepper plantations. Visit one of the Pepper projects and learn how Kampot pepper has been acknowledged by international chefs to be among the world’s best. During the Khmer Rouge time all plantations were abandoned and only recently this NGO has picked up on re-instating the plantations.

Continue to Kep and visit the Royal Family’s retreat house. Nowadays this house is standing abandoned on top of a hill overlooking the Gulf of Thailand. With the help from our anthropologist, the story of the Royal Family and what Kep was like in its prime days will flourish again.

Return towards Sihanoukville and visit on the way Phnom Chhnork. This cave temple is located in the beautiful countryside that surrounds Kampot and Kep. It is also the only cave temple in Cambodia and dates back to the 8th century. Enjoy the explanations of the history of the temple and the ethnic diversity in the region before bidding farewell to your specialized escort.
