ShoreTrips says...

Georgetown, the capital city of Penang, was named after King George III of England and is an interesting blend of the old and new. But Kek Lok Si Temple will have the most impact on your stay here.

Whatever your expectations before arriving into Penang, you will most likely be surprised. Often our image of Malaysia is either quaint and traditional or modern and full of banks. And actually, all those adjectives would be correct. Skyscrapers dot the skyline and a busy bustling town, totally beachless, will welcome you. Friendly people, great food, and lots of culture are everywhere.

Leaving the port in Georgetown you will head to the Kek Lok Si Temple, thought of as the largest Buddhist temple complex in Malaysia. The name Kek Lok Si means "The Temple of Supreme Bliss". As this is a major tourist spot, you will have the advantage of arriving earlier than all the tourist buses. Another name for this temple is the 'Million Buddhas Precious Pagoda" and its tower of simple Chinese saddle-arched eaves along with its elaborate Thai arched windows is topped by a golden Burmese crown called a stupa.

Included in your visit is the 7-Tier Pagoda of 10,000 Buddhas. Whether this is your first visit to a Buddha temple or you have toured them in the past, there is nothing more spiritual than watching the many Buddhists come and pay homage to the spirit of this religion. One cannot help but feel affected by their beliefs - in a good way. You will also see the Bronze Statue of the Goddess.

Now moved by the dedication you witness to this religion, you will return to Georgetown to take the funicular train for a fabulous panoramic view of the city. The elevation of 833m above sea level provides a cool hill retreat from the tropical heat below for a such a scenic view and you can experience the flora and fauna around you. A better understanding of its location will be the outcome, as well as your understanding of the size of the city.

Last but not least, head back to Georgetown where is always abuzz with a hive of activities, heightened by vehicles, pedestrians and roadside peddlers taking their respective places on the tight roads. Try sightseeing on a trishaw – this pedal powered vehicle offers seating for two, a small roof and natural air as it weaves through the harmonious chatter of Penang. You’ll be making stops at Weld Quay to visit the Chew Jetty homes on stilts that overlook the ocean, the exterior of Khoo Kongsi, Street of Harmony, Little India (Mahamariamman Temple) and to the exterior of Fort Cornwallis.
