Xiamen is a city of contrasts and surprises. You never know what to expect in China!

This city has been an important port for China and the name Xiamen means "door to the house," which refers to the city's centuries-old role as a gateway to China. This is a bustling city with a nautical feel and several interesting attractions that are unique.

On this Chinese experience, you will be introduced to gardening and ecology. First a stop at the Wuyuanwan Wetland Park, where you will see lovely ecological settings that attract the unusual, such as black swans. Located at the south edge of Wuyuanwan, Wuyuanwan Wetland Park is the largest park in Xiamen. The park has been reconstructed and developed from the original spillway, freshwater, rural farm.

The depopulated land with freshwater was created as a paradise for bird feeding and sheltering. Additionally, with the construction of a wooden plank road, pavilion, tower, house, dike, and bridge, the park is one of the most popular in Xiamen. For anyone who wants to get close to nature, Wuyuanwan Wetland Park is the best place to go. You will most likely watch at least one wedding take place in one of the two park stops, as unions do occur on any day of the week and the photographs of the wedding are the most important part of the occasion.

The most famous attraction in Xiamen is the island of Gulangyu, for which you will travel by public ferry for a short 10-minute ride. This experience alone is a cultural immersion! Once on the island, which we visit in the afternoon in hopes that most folks are on their way back to the mainland, you will have an unusual look into history as the island was turned into a foreign enclave by the Japanese and Western powers, with consulates located here.

What remains is an island of walking paths dotted with attractive buildings and no traffic, apart from the battery-operated buggies. The island became important in 1842 after the signing of the treaty of Nanking, when the resident representatives of foreign powers established themselves here.

It quickly grew into a European-style town with churches, consulates, and spacious villas. In 1903, it was designated an International Settlement for Europeans and Japanese, complete with its own government and a Sikh police force. It retained its status until the end of World War II, but the island retains the atmosphere of southern Europe.

This is a pleasant exploration on foot and you will visit the famous Piano Museum, which is housed in a villa, before you leave for the mainland. Time will be taken for lunch, which is not included.
