ShoreTrips says...

See why New Orleans has remained a viable and busy city despite many challenges.

In your small group, you will enjoy a comfortable seat and a knowledgeable and dedicated local guide who will impart stories and history of New Orleans while you travel over, under, around and through its highlights. You will begin your tour in the French Quarter where the history and the architecture of this city take predominance. Creole culture is everywhere: Jackson Square, St. Louis Cathedral, Café du Monde and the Mississippi River. The city was developed around the importance of this port for commercial trading and it brought the French and their influence with it.

Along this route, you will see the French Market, the old U.S. Mint and old neighborhoods of New Orleans.

Approaching the London Avenue Canal, we will see the 2 flood wall breaches which caused the devastation to the Gentilly neighborhood. We will stop to view the rain garden along the canal. A walk through the Katina Memorial and the Levee Exhibit Hall will be a somber reminder of the power of Mother Nature.

The famous mansions along Avenue Esplanade are still proudly standing and as you reach this area you will have a short walking tour of the interesting and historic St. Louis Cemetery #3. Then, riding on Bayou St. John you will see the houses built in the 1700s on risers as the area is under sea level. Continuing on, you will drive through City Park to see the antique carousel and centuries old Louisiana oak trees.

Approaching the London Avenue Canal, we will see the 2 flood wall breaches which caused the devastation to the Gentilly neighborhood during Hurricane Katrina. We will stop to view the rain garden and walk through the Katrina Memorial and the Levee Exhibit Hall, a somber reminder of the power of Mother Nature.

Lake Pontchartrain is still a famous landmark and we will move along its shores, viewing the levee system that protects both the city of New Orleans and the surrounding areas of Southeast Louisiana. Your guide will point out the longest of all bridges, the Causeway.

Now for a stop, a guided tour of Longue Vue Mansion and Gardens, which is a magnificent Grand City estate sitting on 8 acres of land. This example of Classical Revival architecture is right in the city and often overlooked yet truly worth your time. Original furniture sits inside like a package waiting to be opened and your enthusiastic tour guide will enhance your experience.

Continuing Uptown, see the universities, the 160-year old streetcar line and famous St. Charles Avenue's grand colonial mansions before you head into the Garden District. There may be a few tales of haunted houses as you pass the many historic homes here.

We will circle the Superdome, drive past the World War II Museum and pass through Downtown before completing this tour.
