ShoreTrips says...

This tour lets you get out of the city and into nature. The beauty of the natural surroundings will be enhanced by learning about the history of the area and people who have lived there for hundreds of years.

This tour will take you from Santa Marta about an hour and forty-five minutes outside the city in an air conditioned vehicle to the Taironaka Reserve located near the Don Diego River. The Tairona people lived in a flourishing society in the times before the Spanish conquest. They were an advanced civilization who lived in stone structures in the jungle. Their descendants the Kogui people (which translates to ‘jaguar’ in their language) have inhabited the same mountain area where they have been able to maintain their traditional way of life. The Taironaka Reserve is an archaeological site that has preserved artifacts from this pre-Colombian culture, where you can see old stone terraces, walkways, drainage systems and old mountain pathways.

On the Don Diego River, you will enjoy a 30 minute ride in a small motorboat that will take you to a site where you will have time to enjoy the beautiful surroundings, and have a quick swim if you choose. You will also receive a snack and soft drink. At the end of your time enjoying the great outdoors, you will take a motorboat back to your vehicle, which will take you back to The Santa Marta harbor.

The clean, cool water of the Don Diego River is one of 36 rivers that flow from the Sierra Nevada into the Caribbean Sea.
