ShoreTrips says...

Grand Turk is home to the 3rd largest barrier reef in the world. Need we say more? Ok, here's more, you can also interact with gentle, friendly stingrays at Gibbs Cay.

Grand Turk is bursting at the seams with healthy, colorful coral and tropical fish. So, if you have any interest in seeing what lies under the water's surface, you've come to the right place. Along with your fellow snorkelers, you'll venture into the water, well equipped with your gear and a great crew. Your boat has a ladder for easy access in and out of the water. If this is your first time snorkeling, your experienced crew will be happy to help you adjust to this new adventure. The close location of the 2 snorkel stop means less travel time and more time enjoying the undersea life. As you head for the protected Columbus Landfall Marine National Park, you can chat with the crew about life in Grand Turk.

The first location is Coral Reef Gardens and it is approximately 6-8 feet deep, a great depth for snorkeling. It's filled to the gills with marine life such as yellowtail snappers, pilotfish, and the protected parrotfish. Keep an eye out for nurse sharks, not dangerous and easy to pet. They might or might not show up, based on the weather. You will also get to experience a variety of Caribbean coral cluster formations and sponges at this reef, such as brain coral and barrel coral.

Not far away is your second snorkel stop, the famous Grand Turk Wall. Just 1,000 feet off-shore, it is the third-largest barrier reef in the world. Its coral shelf starts at a depth of 20 feet and continues as the water level gets deeper to an unfathomable 7,000 feet and beyond. No worries, you will be near the shallower edge of the wall and you should be able to view the coral easily. At the wall, you will be enthralled by tropical fish of every color and description. Your instructors will help you identify them, so watch for parrotfish that graze the coral, the inquisitive chubs and balllyhoos that come cruising by.

Back on the boat, your crew will provide some snacks as you make your way to Gibbs Cay. Your guide will explain how to move among the gentle "flying" stingrays, swim with and pet them. Then, enjoy some beach time before returning to town.
