We begin this tour by traveling upriver from New Orleans to learn about the development of plantations between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Once known as the German Coast, and then the Gold Coast, this area was once a center of Louisiana's ultra-wealthy sugar-planter class. We will discuss the crops that preceded sugar cane and the technology that led to sugar's dominance of South Louisiana.

Once we arrive at Oak Alley Plantation, we will take a half tour of the historic Big House led by an Oak Alley docent. This guided tour will focus both on the Roman family that owned the property, as well as the harsh realities of the enslaved people at this and other plantations in South Louisiana.

After the Big House tour, you will have an opportunity to experience some of the self-guided activities and exhibits at Oak Alley. Some of these include "Slavery at Oak Alley", the Civil War Encampment, the Blacksmith Shop, and Sugarcane Theater. You will also have an opportunity to dine at Oak Alley's on-site restaurant or cafe. After you finish eating, you will have the option to browse the gift shop.

On the return drive, your guide will talk about the culture and legal systems that helped to reinforce the institution of slavery and the continued oppression of African Americans in Postbellum and Jim Crow Louisiana.
