We didn't give Crete a second thought until our first visit. We traveled all over this island. It offers the historical, modern, extremes in terrain, wonderful people, and great food. And if you have a chance to visit the Museum of Homo Sapiens, you will never forget it!
Agios Nikolaos is the east tourist centre of Crete, where modern facilities combine with the picturesqueness of the past. It's considered the Cretan St. Tropez and you will be surprised at the scenery.
Travel through the breadbasket of Crete, where impeccably cultivated land supports a variety of crops--potatoes and grain, apples and pears--all irrigated by thousands of windmills. Crete was the granary of ancient Rome, and the produce from the island was considered superior to any other in the empire.
Visit the 17th century monastery of Kera with its fine frescoes and Byzantine icons. Continue on through woods and small villages to the plateau of Lassithi, where a breathtaking panorama awaits--a landscape ringed by mountains and dotted with the island's characteristic windmills. Lassithi Plateau is one of the few areas in the Mediterranean with permanent inhabitants at an altitude over 800 metres.
Your final stop is at the village of Seli, where you are treated to refreshments at a local taverna in true Cretan style.
