ShoreTrips says...

We loved this town. It bustled and had great history worth learning about. And the area around the city is lovely.

Most visitors have no expectations of Ajaccio and Corsica in general and this visit will surprise in a good way. Above all, Ajaccio's claim to fame is as the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte. As you head out of the town limits, you will see the Place de Gaulle, the Courts of Austerlitz, and the Place Bonaparte, all of which you will have time to explore on your own after your tour. The impact of Napoleon is apparent and will not escape your attention. You'll pass the house where he was born--now the National Bonaparte Museum, make a stop at the caves where he played, see statues of him, and pass streets and places named in his honour.

Enjoy your ride along the peninsula named I Sanguinari or Great Site by the Ministry of the Environment. It's nickname of bloody islands is believed to come from the intense red sunset and/or the local flowers of the same color. This area has been developed to allow you to discover the peninsula and its Genoese Tower safely, while respecting the environment. Located at the entrance of the Gulf of Ajaccio, the site offers an exceptional panoramic view, as well as access to the marine environments in the heart of the coastline. This is a 20-minute walk with slightly steep cobblestone stairs. Even though the tower is not open, the view is incredible. At the end of the peninsula, you can contemplate the Sanguinary Islands from a converted platform.

On the way, hear the story of another famous Corsican also born in Ajaccio, Constantin Rossi. Known as Tino Rossi and famous for his operatic voice and his nickname as a "Latin Lover," he is buried in a cemetery in an unusual location.

You will return to Ajaccio along the road that follows beautiful beaches and the sea. Once back in town, you will enjoy a guided walking tour of the city center of Ajaccio, including Square de Gaulle and the statue of Napoleon surrounded by his four brothers, the Cathedral, and the Square Foch. As you walk through the old town, you will enter the House of Napoleon, his birthplace. You will enjoy some free time in the local market before returning to the pier on foot with your guide. If you prefer, you can stay in Ajaccio and continue to explore on your own.
