ShoreTrips says...

Calling all "Game of Thrones" fans! See your favorite locations from your favorite show up close and personal. Actually you don't have to even watch "Game of Thrones" to thoroughly enjoy the rugged landscapes, steaming volcanoes and sparkling lakes surrounding Akureyri.

If you think Iceland's geological features are impressive on the ground, take a look from the air. The scope and scale of this craggy, rugged, steaming landscape becomes even more impressive when viewed from high above. This tour focuses on The Diamond Circle, a region of spectacular beauty and interest in northeastern Iceland.

From the moment you step on board the plane, with luxurious leather seating, large viewing windows and headsets for each passenger, you'll know this is going to be a special day.

After takeoff, we head to the powerful yet elegant Godafoss Waterfall, one of Iceland's most dramatic sights.

We next fly to Lake Myvatn, a beautiful volcanic lake, surrounded by a nature preserve and charactarised by pseudo craters that dot the dramatic landscape. Other sites of interest in the area include the boiling mud pots and fumaroles of Namaskard and the nature baths of Jardbodin.

As the tour continues, your guide will point out places of special interest to Game of Thrones fans, including the lava fields of Dimmuborgir, where Mance Rayder and the Free Folk built their camp during Season 3. You'll see Grjotagja Cave, used as the Love Cave for Jon Snow and Ygritte, the sulfur pools of Hverarond. Much of the “north of the Wall” ladscape is filmed at or near Lake Myvatn.

Iceland uses its unique topography to full advantage by harnessing heat and pressure beneath the surface to produce geothermal power. We'll fly over the Krafla power station which supplies much of the electricity for the northeast part of the island. Iceland relies almost solely on economically friendly hydro – and geothermal electricity supply.

The view of Dettifoss Waterfall is sure to be impressive. This most powerful waterfall in all of Europe is located where the glacial river from the mighty Vatnajokull Glacier plunges into a deep canyon, providing spectacular views when seen from above.

Those serious photographers searching for completely unobstructed views are able to open the doors of the plane (while buckled in tight, of course) for clear, brilliant photographs, unattainable when looking through glass, although the “open door policy” must be agreed upon beforehand and executed with the proper safety precautions and briefing by our professional staff.

As we head back to the airport, we will pass the Eyjafjordur fjord, Iceland´s longest fjord, with more than a 50% chance at spotting whales, that habitually reisde in this magnificent fjord.
