The Port of Alicante has been reinventing itself since the industrial decline the city suffered in the 1980s as much of the commercial traffic was lost to Valencia's harbour. This has been an easy task considering all there is to do in Alicante that plays to the interests of the travelers along the coastline of Spain. Its beaches, monuments and fantastic museums all form part of this city’s great appeal not to mention its location on the Mediterranean Sea. Renowned for being a dynamic city, with a warm climate, Alicante has become a very popular city to visit, taking much overflow from those more well-known along the coast.

A panoramic drive will introduce you to the city and its history. Most important is the view from Saint Barbara's Castle and the history of the Co-Cathedral. The Castle of Santa Bárbara is perched on top of Mount Benacantil, at a height of almost 550 feet and stands one of Spain’s largest medieval fortresses providing great views of Alicante’s perfect bay. The San Nicolás Co-Cathedral construction began on the San Nicolás Co-Cathedral in the year 1600, replacing a building that had stood their previously. It is built in the Herrerian renaissance style and is located in the heart of the city. The ride from one to the other is lovely and very representative of the tightening of proximity between people in the old historic city centers. You will continue on the drive along the Esplanade. Also known as the “Paseo de la Explanada”, this is a maritime promenade that runs parallel to the port, from the Puerta del Mar to Canalejas Park. It is lovely and one of the most popular areas in Alicante.

Your guide will take you through the picturesque streets in Santa Cruz quarter on foot while explaining monuments such us the City Hall, the Co-Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, and the oldest church on the city, Saint Mary’s Church. It is easy to witness the lifestyle here as relaxed and understand the draw for locals and from other areas in Europe to this way of living.

As you make your way through the city, you will see Casa Carbonell or “Carbonell House” standing at Number 1 on the Explanada de España esplanade, which is one of the most striking buildings in Alicante. The most incredible piece of artwork in Alicante is the ceramic design of the esplanade, which consists of over 6 million tiles but so worth the time and effort as it is memorable and welcoming to all.
