ALICANTE AND ITS ARCHEOLOGICAL MUSEUM

ALICANTE AND ITS ARCHEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
ShoreTrips says...
Yes we all know Barcelona and most of us are familiar with Valencia. Time to catch up as Alicante is becoming the hot spot for travelers as it has all that the other cities have but less tourists!
Alicante is a city with over 3000 years of history, as revealed by the earliest archaeological remains found at the Cova del Fum cave in Fontcalent, which date from the third millennium BC. Yet its draw today is the climate, the location, the size, and the accessibility. Therefore, to combine your visit with both cultural highlights and history as well, you may be persuaded into returning for a long stay like many other visitors.
Now with a population of 335,000, Alicante is the capital of the Alicante province. It is best to begin your introduction with a panoramic overview of the city which will bring together the historic bullring and the central market. Part of your excursion will take you to Saint Barbara Castle in the Benacantil Mountains, a building over 400 feet above sea level. This castle was a huge strategic move in the city's history as it allowed control over the tempting Alicante bay.
You will visit the barrio of Santa Cruz, a peaceful and colorful neighborhood full of energy. In this walking tour the co-cathedral will be included too, built on the remains of a mosque. The town hall administrative building, interesting due to its baroque style. Many of the most well-known buildings nearby will be pointed out such as the Carbonell House, a modernist residential palace built in the 20s which sits on the gorgeous Esplanade, which is also stunningly designed with over 6 million ceramic tiles to form an incredible piece of artwork underfoot.
During your tour you will visit the Archeological Museum. The city is very proud of this museum which houses exhibits that date from the Palaeolithic through the contemporary modern culture, tracing the history of Alicante. The museum was created in 1932 and has been enlarged over time. It offers a very innovative approach by creating an avant-garde delivery with modern audiovisual techniques.
