Your arrival into Arles is lovely. The city bends around the curve of the river and delivers that magic that was captured in Starry Night by Van Gogh. Arles is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and sits on a low hill where the Rhône river branches in two parts to the sea. The town dates back to the 7th century BC, and was a major Gallo-Roman city. The major Roman sites, such as the Arena and the Theater, are unique in that they are integrated into the houses and buildings of the town, rather than sitting apart as they do in so many other towns of this size.

The streets of this city are truly medieval in character: narrow and winding between ancient buildings. Automobile traffic is permitted on many of them, but walking is much easier than driving. The Roman ruins sit surprisingly in the midst of business. There are numerous plazas and squares, usually anchored by a church. It is a town that you can feel as you travel through it, the history and the culture are so apparent.

If you wish you will visit a beautiful 11th century monastery which was converted into a psychiatric clinic. It was at this location that Vincent Van Gogh voluntarily committed himself for treatment. There he painted some of his most famous works.

Though your walk through Arles was a little bit of exercise, you will now take a ride to a lovely area where you can enjoy a nice hike in Alpilles National Park.
