We'll drive out to many wonderful places on this excursion such as: Peloponnese, Mycenae, Nafplion, and the world famous theater of Epidaurus.

We'll start the day with a scenic drive along the coast towards the Peloponnese peninsula and stop at the famous Corinth Canal, which cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnesian peninsula from the Greek mainland, therefore effectively making the former an island.

Next, we're off to Mycenae--the city "rich in gold" as described by Homer. Home of Agamemnon, the ancient king who united and commanded the Greeks during the Trojan War, the ruins of Mycenae were thought to be a myth until Heinrich Schlieman proved otherwise. At one time, the city overlooked a large bay, which is now the plain of Argos. The site is impressive and features the Palace of Agamemnon, the treasury of Atreaus, and the tomb of Clytemnestra (the wife of the great king). The famous Lion's Gate is the oldest monumental sculpture in Europe and is said to be the coat of arms of Atreaus, mythical king of Mycenae. You'll also view the Mycenaean palace on the crest of the hill, a smaller palace further east (known as the House of Columns), the House of Artists, and, finally, the Secret Cistem.

Continuing on, we'll visit Nafplion, the capital of Argolid and the former capital of the Greek state (from 1828 to 1834, before this role passed to Athens). Nafplion is one of the loveliest towns in all of Greece. The old city is adorned with neoclassic houses, picturesque streets, wooden balconies with cascading flowers, Turkish fountains, and Constitution (Syntagma) Square.

Next, we'll proceed to Epidaurus, where the ancient Asklepeios (God of Medicine) is located. We'll see the best preserved open-air theater with its amazing acoustics and visit the dwellings of priests and doctors, a gymnasium, baths, and other structures.
