ShoreTrips says...

Founded around 735 BC by Corinth Greek settlers, Syracuse has been inhabited since very ancient times. Prosperous and strong, for a time it was the most powerful Greek city in the Mediterranean.

Enter the Parco Archaeological, home to many of Syracuse's most interesting sites. You will first be confronted by the Paradiso Stone Quarries, home to well-manicured gardens and orchards that give way to steep cliffs.

Pay a visit to the Theatre, which boasts the largest cavea (sitting area) ever built by the ancient Greeks: it could hold 1500 people in 67 rows, divided into 9 different sections. You may also want to check out the Roman amphitheatre, partly carved out from the rock surrounding it and dating back to the Roman Imperial age.

And most people will not want to miss the Ear of Dionysius, one of the Paradiso Stone Quarries most interesting sites. Although it looks natural, this artificial cave was most likely carved out of an old limestone quarry. Legend has it that the tyrant Dionysius I used the cave as a prison for political prisoners. Because of the good acoustics, he was able to easily eavesdrop on the plans and secrets of his prisoners.

Time permitting, your guide can also take you to some of the city's other interesting sites, such as The Cathedral of Syracuse or Castello Maniace.
