The peaceful, spirited Dublin that greets you upon your arrival is the product of centuries of revolutionary ferment that reached their peak during the fateful 1916 Easter Rising. This tour is guided by a local historian, who takes you on an immersive journey into the Irish past--a past that still reverberates today. Because the Irish consider their history to be almost sacred, this trip is essential for understanding how this extraordinary country came to be.

The Easter Rising, also known as the Easter Rebellion, was an armed insurrection in Ireland during Easter Week, April 1916. The Rising was launched by Irish republicans amidst the tumult of World War One in hopes of ending British rule in Ireland and establishing an independent Irish Republic. The rebellion began on a sleepy Easter bank holiday, when around 1,500 armed Irish nationalist rebels, allied with Germany, seized control of Dublin, which was then a major city of the UK. The group held the center of Dublin for six days before they surrendered. On this tour, you will step into the shoes of the republicans as they reclaimed this colonial city.

Your guide, a trained historian and lecturer, will begin by escorting you through the former Houses of Parliament. You will learn about the conditions that gave rise to the rebellion, including the Act of Union in 1800, which eliminated the Irish Parliament and created the opposing concepts of Unionism and Nationalism that defined Irish politics for the next century.

Next, you will enter Dublin Castle, which saw the rebellion's first casualties. From here, you will cross Grattan Bridge and Millennium Bridge, key sites for comprehending how the battle unfolded across the city. Your guide will take you through the play-by-play of the action, pointing out the garrisons along the river and chronicling the skirmishes that took place along the quayside.

At the end of the tour you will find yourself at the Dublin General Post Office, which served as headquarters for the uprising's leaders. The building's facade is untouched from the revolutionary days, and your guide will recount how the rebels found themselves surrounded, bombarded by British artillery. The new General Post Office visitor center features interactive exhibits dramatizing the hostilities.

Irish history is exceptionally rich, and this tour offers an unrivaled opportunity to delve into the Irish past in an intimate setting, with an expert guide who can bring these fascinating stories to life.
