With open tops for extra fun and adventure, these colorful jeeps are the best way to explore the peaks and valleys of Madeira.
Funchal's unique topography is well suited to exploration by jeep. We begin by heading up, up to Cabo Girao, the highest sea cliff in Europe. At an elevation of 1,900', you are guaranteed spectacular, panoramic views of the coastline and the town of Camara de Lobos far below.
Our tour up the mountains continues, to the Valley of the Nuns. This small village is named for the nuns of the Convent of Santa Clara who found safe refuge in this secluded location from pirate attacks in Funchal. Nestled in a crater and surrounded by towering mountains, the village is known for its chestnut production, which is celebrated each year with a Chestnut Festival, featuring food, music, dancing, and wine.
As we pass by the mountainous Boca dos Namorados, ask your guide to tell you why this area is known as the "Mouth of the Valentine".
Our jeeps wend their way down country roads, past the quiet, beautiful village of Jardin de Serra, dotted with cherry trees and lovely terraced vineyards. Quaint colorful homes with orange rooftops serve as vibrant accents among the deep green mountainsides en route to the traditional fishing village of Camara de Lobos. The village, with its colored boats bobbing in the harbor, is so beautiful that it inspired Winston Churchill to put brush to canvas to capture its bays, houses, and the monk seals that peacefully coexist with their human neighbors.
We end our tour with a taste of one of the area's most famous products, either wine from one of the oldest wine cellars in the area or poncha, a local alcoholic beverage made with sugar cane, lemon juice, and honey and favored by local fishermen.
