ShoreTrips is in no way responsible for Loch Ness monster attacks. Don't forget you read this! Although there haven't been any confirmed skirmishes to date we don't want to run the risk. After a brief visit to the capital city of the Highlands, Inverness, you will journey to the most famous body of water in Scotland. At 23 miles long and with enough water to fill every lake and river in England the Loch Ness can't help but house the beauties of Scotland's landscape, and maybe even a monster. Although Osprey and wild goats are more likely to grace your presence we ask that you send any pictures of the fabled underwater creature our way before taking them public. Enjoy a water cruise amongst some of the best scenery in Scotland!

At the north end of the loch sits the ruins of Urquhart Castle. Through many battles it fell into decay in 1689 and was then blown up 3 years later as a way to prevent it from being occupied by the Jacobites. The nearby visitor center provides a model showing of what this castle looked like in its prime and creates the perfect context for commentary on the destruction of war. The panoramic views from this point made this an ideal location for a castle as a vantage point for attacks and a calming spot during times of peace. Take on the challenge of trying to re-imagine the full structure as you walk through the grounds.

A final stop will be made in Culloden Moor which played host to a history changing battle on the 16th of April in 1746. Though the battle lasted a mere 40 minutes, it was the final nail in the coffin for the regime of Prince Charles Edward. A well armed Hanoverian army led by the son of King George II destroyed the Prince's under-matched men on a marshy ground, putting an end to the Jacobite rising. Graves of clans, communal burial spaces and a visitor center will tell the story.
