ShoreTrips says...

The lovely small coastal towns are so wonderful to see and well worth the cost for a private look into the past.

Norway remained largely neutral during WWI, and hoped to preserve it's neutrality during WWII. However, on April 8th, 1940 German forces invaded Norway and the Norwegian people mounted an unlikely resistance. 62 days of fighting ensued, making Norway the nation that withstood German invasion for longer than any country other than the Soviet Union.

During this comprehensive war history tour you will get a first hand look into what happened in and around Kristiansand during German occupation. Just outside of the city, our first stop will be at the Kristiansand Cannon Museum at the Vara Battery. Soon after German invasion of Norway, construction of a large number of artillery installations began along the coast, including the Vara Battery. The Vara Battery is now operated as a museum, and it's exhibits demonstrate the importance of Norwegian military history. While here you will see the only completely intact 38 cm gun in the world.

On our return to Kristiansand we will stop at Stiftelsen Arkivet, a research foundation housed in a building that once served as the Gestapo regional headquarters during World War Two. Here we will take a guided tour and will see former prison cells, torture chambers, as well as interrogation centers which have been reconstructed to display the events that took place here, illustrated by the installations of human size dolls.

As we return to the ship, you will pass part of Kristiansand's old town. This part of Kristiansand has many characteristic right angled streets and is known as Kvadraturen in Norwegian. Part of this area is Posebyen which constitutes one of the largest collection of low, wooden houses in Northern Europe.
