ShoreTrips says...

Paphos is the mythical birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite, of love, sexual intercourse and beauty.

Pathos is a coastal city in the southwest of Cyprus and the capital of Paphos District. It is Paphos that is the mythical birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite, of love, sexual intercourse and beauty. The founding myth is interwoven with the goddess at every level. In Greco-Roman times Paphos was the island's capital, and it is famous for the remains of the Roman Governor's palace, where extensive, fine mosaics are a major tourist attraction. The apostle Paul of Tarsus visited the town during the first century. The legacy from its remarkable history adds up to nothing less than an open museum, so much so that UNESCO simply added the whole town to its World Cultural Heritage List.

First stop is to see Petra Tou Romiou, three rocks just off the coast which Greek mythology identifies as the birthplace of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, beauty and fertility. Then we will move on to the beautiful mosaics in the house of Dionysos, which are considered among the finest in the Eastern Mediterranean. Then there are the mysterious vaults and caves, the Tombs of the Kings, the Pillar to which Saint Paul was allegedly tied and whipped. Visit the Tombs of the Kings, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, to see Hellenistic and Roman underground tombs inspired by Egyptian burial practices. Also, the Catacombs of Agia Solomoni will follow on this itinerary. (outside view only)

To turn to another century altogether, we visit an attractive fishing harbour near the Medieval fort. You will have some time to wander and contemplate the connection between the ancient world and the present as you wander around the old fishing harbour. You will have some free time to shop before you enjoy a lovely lunch.
