Monemvasia is located in the southeastern Peloponnese. It is separated from the mainland by a span of 400 meters, as the result of an earthquake in 375 A.D. Its name derives from two Greek words, mone and emvassi, meaning "single entrance" and it is now an island.
On this tour, you'll visit the astonishingly complete Byzantine city of Mystras that once sheltered a population of some 42,000. Winding alleys lead through monumental gates, and past medieval houses, palaces, and impressive churches. High atop Mt. Taygetos, and overlooking the modern town of Sparta, is a ruined medieval citadel. Its defensive walls are still standing, having outlived their creators and the conquerors of their creators.
Mystras is considered one of the best examples of both Byzantine architecture. Its occupants are long gone, but it continues to serve as a time machine for all those who are fortunate enough to visit. It allows us to walk among walls that have been standing for thousands of years.
