ShoreTrips says...

Marseille is an often overlooked city, as it is thought of more as a center of commerce than a tourist attraction. You will find the city both interesting and stimulating as you discover the reality of its place as the point of introduction of many new influences to France.

Begin with a visit to Notre Dame de la Garde. Much-cherished by the locals, this 19th century basilica will offer you an exceptional view of this Phocean city, the Frioul Islands and the If Castle. While you are up top enjoying the view, your driver will enhance your experience with a brief history of Marseille, details about the monuments that you are seeing and some fascinating facts about the basilica itself. You will have ample time to visit the church and enjoy the view, as well as take as many pictures as you like.

Marseille was named the Cultural Center of Europe in 2015, which was the culmination of the completion of several stunning feats of architecture which really put the city on the map. It will be apparent during your visit why this designation was awarded. So you will continue on your journey through the city, stopping at the Cité Radieuse (Classified Historic Monument) of Le Corbusier, one of the architects of the Bauhaus Movement, where your guide will give you a history of this interesting site.

Your tour will continue outside of the city to the traditional fishing villages of Callelongue and Les Goudes, where you will learn the details of life as a local in such an interesting place. There is always some envy when you see a simple lifestyle that centers on fishermen and their catch. Remembering that this is still France and Marseille is where Bouillabaisse was first created, fish is an integral part of the diet in this area.

Your tour continues with a drive along the Corniche on your way to the Vallon des Auffes where you will find a picturesque scene made up of typical little fishing boats and cabins all crowded together on the water. Stop here for a chance to walk around and take some more pictures.

Your drive alone your way to the Abbey of Saint Victor. Built in the 1ast century, the abbey stands as the entry to the Old Port. Here there will be plenty of time to explore and enjoy the view as your guide fills you in on the history of this old landmark. Your visit to the abbey will be followed by a drive on the famous Canebière, on your way to the enchanting Longchamp Palace and its majestic fountain.

Also keep in mind that you may stop and get out of the car at any point during the tour; just let your guide know!
