JEWISH PALERMO

JEWISH PALERMO
ShoreTrips says...
Your tour begins in the historical center of the city, where you will walk through the narrow streets of the Jewish quarter and its fascinating remains.
Visit the site of the Synagogue and, with the help of some descriptions made by Jewish medieval travellers long ago, discover the lives and experiences of the biggest Jewish community of Sicily's capital city.
Next, continue on to the Duomo, a former mosque turned into a church in 1135, and the imposing building of the Norman Palace, one of the most beautiful Italian palaces and a notable example of Norman architecture. Both of these buildings will give you a deeper understanding of the social intercourse between Jews, religious power, and political power in Palermo.
Your final stop will be the splendid Zisa, commissioned by the Norman King William I but built by his Muslim architects, with all their Middle-Eastern influence. Built in Norman-Arab style, the palace still keeps a Hebrew inscription and a Jewish candle-holder.
