Discover the island of Bornholm, with its dramatic rock formations and rift valleys, very different from the rest of Denmark. We'll visit its interesting natural, manmade, and historic sites.

Your tour departs from the port of Rønne and heads towards the fishing village of Hasle, passing through a lovely wooded area which connects these two villages.

From Hasle, you can see the coast of Sweden, a mere 20 miles away at its closest point. Approaching the northern tip of the island you'll arrive at the impressive ruins of the medieval fortress Hammershus, where your guide will relate its history. Today, Hammershus is the largest castle ruin in Northern Europe. Construction of the castle began in the early 1200s, to consolidate the power of the archbishop of Lund over the island. For the next 500 years, Hammershus was the seat of power for the island’s succession of rulers. In 1743, the king of Denmark finally abandoned Hammershus and the castle fell into ruin until 1822 when it was listed on the National Historic Register.

After exploring Hammershus, your private tour moves to the northeast coast of Bornholm through rolling countryside and charming hamlets, arriving at the small fishing village of Gudhjem. Its location on a steep rocky outcrop is the only one of its kind on the island. You'll make a stop in the village to view the restoration and preservation of its original environment. The climate – and especially Bornholm’s many hours of sunshine – provide good growing conditions for mulberry, walnut and fig trees.

Bornholm has four round churches. You'll see the largest, the Round Church of Østerlars. The church's black roof provides a striking and beautiful contrast to its alabaster white exterior. Recently restored frescoes, including one depicting the birth of Christ, are visible on its center column. A stairway inside leads all the way to the top of the church, offering splendid views of vast areas of Bornholm.

Continuing along the northeast coast, you'll make a stop in the fishing village of Svaneke, with its half-timbered houses and farmhouses rising from the harbor's rocky cliffs. Watch gentle breezes turn the sails of the best-preserved and only working windmill on the island. This is a lovely place to stop for a delightful, casual lunch. Your guide will be happy to present you with some dining options.

No visit to the island of Bornholm would be complete without a stop at its most famous beach, Dueodde Beach. Known for its very fine white sand and untouched beauty, Dueodde Beach boasts crystal clear water with abundant sandbars for swimming and wading. Climb the stairs to the top of the lighthouse for spectacular views before heading back to Rønne.
