ShoreTrips says...

Whatever my imagination conjured up about the Blue Lagoon, it was not true. Honestly it is all they say it is.

No trip to Iceland would be complete without a visit to the Blue Lagoon.

Before heading to this famous attraction, we will first explore the unique geological qualities of the Reykjanes Peninsula, a UNESCO Global Geopark with diverse volcanic and geothermal activity. It includes a 8km hike to the active volcano at Fagradalsfjall and Geldingadalir. After visting the volcano we will start exploring the geothermal wonders of Reykjanes. Among highlights are boiling mud pools of Gunnuhver and Seltún, colorful lava fields and volcanic craters. Our guide will explain the geological forces behind a landscape of this caliber. Towards the end of the tour we stop at the Blue Lagoon and explore the area and the history of this popular tourist attraction.

Your preconceived idea of what the Blue Lagoon is will be smashed as soon as you enter the building. As you approach, steam from misty blue waters is rising around you. The geothermal power plant nearby created this main attraction outside of Reykajvik and it has been brilliantly executed. The property is a development of the by-products of the power plant, when deep boreholes were drilled to extract the blazing-hot, mineral-rich water under pressure from thousands of feet underground. This water produces electricity by driving steam turbines and the runoff water, which, while is still very hot, is too salty to provide central heating for homes. The idea of piping it into the lagoon dug from the lava pits, with the algae, silica, and other minerals, was brilliant.

As you arrive, do not turn off when you see lots of buses, people from every corner of the world pulling their luggage, and stragglers trying to figure out where to go. It looks like chaos, but it is not your chaos. You will not fall into those categories.

You will be picked up and brought to the lagoon by a driver who will get you as close as possible to the entrance. Upon your arrival you will be directed to the appropriate locker rooms to change. The vibe here is all energy and though a good majority of the visitors are from foreign countries, there are always a good representation of locals who often visit the lagoon once a week to immerse themselves in the healing waters.

Enter the water, move around as you wish. Groups of friends talk while immersed waiting for the healing powers to work. When you feel ready, you can exit, shower and continue on your day.

The restaurant serves delicious food and there is also a snack bar where you can graze. You will be tempted to purchase some products made from this special mineral water and beware, they are much more costly if you order once you return home!
