ShoreTrips says...

We made it a point to see the lovely new synagogue just outside of the Old Tallinn. We had not seen a new synagogue during our explorations of Europe except for here and it was a great surprise!

Estonia's independence and the creation of the Republic of Estonia in 1918 proved to be a decisive moment for the Jewish community's growth in Tallinn. As Jewish societies and associations began to develop, a more involved Jewish community dipped their hands into the cultural and political infrastructure of Estonia. This tour is a perfect way to learn about the rise of a Jewish society starting in the early 1900s, as well as an introduction to the main highlights that make Tallinn what it is today.

After being picked up from the port, you will make your way through the abundance of green space that encircles Tallinn's historic center. You will pass by the beautiful Kardior Park, which is home to a palace built by former king of Russia, Peter I. As your drive continues, you will come across the Lauluvaljak, which many consider a symbol of liberty in Estonia. The musical grounds can hold up to 250,000 spectators and has played host to everyone from Madonna to Michael Jackson.

Once in the Old Town, the cobblestone roads and iron street lamps will have your mind wandering back to the 13th century. Step out of your vehicle at Toompea Hill and start a lesuirely walk through what feels like 17th century Moscow as you pass a dominant Russian Orthodox Church and the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Inside the 13th century "Dome Church," you will see 100 medieval coats of arms on display as tokens to the long list of historical figures buried at this site. The rich history and incredible views of the city will make this stop one of the most memorable sites of the tour.

As you make your way to the Lower Town, you won't be able to keep your eyes off the cluster of red tiled rooftops as you approach what some consider the best preserved Town Hall Square in Northern Europe. Following your walk down Kullaseppa street, where many residents with Jewish heritage currently live, you will take a short drive out of the Old Town to visit the current Jewish Community Center. In this blossoming community, you will see it's history both past and present. From the Jewish Museum that opened in 2011 to the site of the first Synagogue in Tallin, you will gain an understanding of a Jewish Community that was once under Russian rule. Given Tallinn's complex history, this is not a tour you will want to miss!
