ShoreTrips says...

You are in one of the most romantic coastlines in the world. Take advantage and take in the beauty.

Arriving into Toulon, you are in the midst of the most popular towns on the French coastline. To be here and not see them is criminal. This tour will begin with a drive to Sanary-sur-Mer. There is no real must-see sight in Sanary; it's more a place for strolling around and relaxing deliciously in the provençal sun. The picturesque harbour is the main magnet. The municipality has cleverly arranged for the mooring spaces closest to the town to be reserved for dozens of colourful pointus, or traditional provencal fishing boats, and heritage vessels, some dating back to the late 19th century. Less photogenic modern boats are all banished to the edge of the port. Expect a laissez-faire attitude here from your guide, as the air alone delivers the lusciousness of the relaxed lifestyle we think of as France, regardless of its truth.

Your ride continues along the coastline to Cassis, a lovely fishing town the hugs the water. Cassis is still a small fishing port, but the little fishing boats now share the harbor with yachts and a collection of tourist boats for visiting the calanques -- a trip you shouldn't miss. You will have time to take a boat ride among the massive white stones that seem to grow out of the sea. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site so you may choose to experience this adventure.

You have seen the coastline from eye level and now you will drive through the area called La Crêtes to see a panoramic view from above - this before heading to another lovely village, Le Castellet. Not your typical town, instead this is a highlight in this region, a superb little feudal village perched on the tip of its promontory which will enchant you with its typical Provencal picturesque setting.

Le Castellet was the setting for the film, The Baker's Wife, but most well-known is its place in race history as it has its Formula One racetrack just a few miles from the village which hosts major car races and motor bike grand prix.

One more village, famous for its wine, is Bandol. This gentle seaside resort in a sheltered bay, cradled by hills and protected from the wind, known as the “ville tranquille” for good reason. It is popular in summer and has long been a quiet retreat for artists and writers like Thomas Mann. There is a picturesque yachting harbour, and tuna fishing to watch and many beautiful villas surrounded by pines and mimosa. The seafront is a delightful promenade shaded by pine, oleander and palm trees, and there are plenty of bars and restaurants, all with outstanding local food and wines.
Enjoy a walk along the promenade and the beach before heading back.

All in all, a lovely tour of contrasts but yet all delivering the romantic relaxed atmosphere that we think of as France at its best.
