ShoreTrips says...

This tour will take you out of the congestion and up to Cannaregio, the northeast district of the city. Secluded by geography from the busy Rialto-San Marco hub, this area is teeming with authentic Venetian ambiance.

Cannaregio, one of the six "sestieri" (neighborhoods), is a rather unspoiled part of town, still mostly inhabited by genuine Venetians.

The Ghetto Nuovo is a small island surrounded by canals in the Cannaregio District. In 1516, the Council of Ten decreed that the Jews of the city be confined to this area, which was then cut off from the rest of the city by wide canals. Within a very small space, a diverse group of Jews contributed to both the commercial wealth of Venice and the diffusion of their own culture. As the number of Jews in the area increased, the Ghetto was forced to expand, and buildings rose to six or more stories--a unique happening in Venice.

Walk down along the luminous canals to the gothic church Madonna dell'Orto. Attended by the painter Tintoretto, the church now contains several of his paintings, including a huge mural of "The Last Judgement." Tintoretto's tomb is also located here. Past this restful stop, at the extreme northern point of town, you will enjoy a marvelous, melancholy view over the lagoon, with the cemetery island of San Michele stretching out before you.

At the end of the tour, you will take the vaporetto back to San Marco with your guide.
