PRIVATE: HISTORIC AND CULTURAL KONA WITH FARM HIGHLIGHTS
ShoreTrips says...
This tour highlights the beautiful west coast of the Island of Hawaii. There's lots to see, so let's get started.
Your day begins with a visit to Kaloko-Honokohau National Historic Park. The abundant sea life has drawn people here for centuries and you'll explore those ancient cultures with a trail walk showcasing petroglyphs and sacred temples. See the Aiopi'o fish trap and walk the salt and pepper sands of the shore. This beach is home to numerous sea turtles who come to feed on algae and bask on the warm sands. If you're lucky, you might also catch a glimpse of a monk seal or two.
En route to the honey farm, you'll drive through downtown Kona, home to the Hulihee Palace and Mokuaikaua Church, the oldest Christian church in Hawaii.
A trip to one of the world's leading honey farms will have you buzzing. An experienced beekeeper will share the secrets to keeping 120 million bees happy and thriving (don't worry, you'll be in a "bee-free zone" for the talk). And with that many bees, you can be assured of the highest quality honey. This organic, raw, single-source honey is intensely flavored and unparalleled in taste. "Bee" sure to try a sample! You'll have the opportunity to purchase some of this Hawaiian nectar to enjoy once you've returned home.
The Kealakekua Bay Lookout is the landing spot of Captain James Cook, the first European to discover the Hawaiian Islands. Although Captain Cook met an untimely end, your visit here is on a much lighter note. A delightful picnic and gorgeous views await you and your fellow travelers.
After lunch you'll head to Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historic Park. In ancient times, lawbreakers came here to be absolved of their sins by the local priest.
You'll never look at your morning cup of joe quite the same after touring a local coffee farm. From seedling to harvest to drying to roasting, it's fascinating to realize how many steps take place before you choose a bag of coffee beans off the grocery store shelf. Sample a warm cup of Kona-grown coffee to end the tour.
