ShoreTrips says...

This mix of history, shopping and natural phenomena provides a wonderful way to spend your day in St. John.

After a pickup at the cruise ship pier, we begin our tour with a visit to the impressive Reversing Falls. This unusual event occurs when the waters of the Bay of Fundy and the St. John River collide. At low tide, the river empties into the bay, causing turbulent, foamy whirlpools and rapids. When the tide begins to rise, the flow of the river is reversed, again forming rapids which peak at high tide. You'll want to keep your camera handy.

We'll make a stop at the Carleton Martello Tower National Historic Site. Your guide will tell you all about the tower, known as the "Sentinel of St. John" as you enjoy the impressive bird's-eye view of the city below.

We move on to the lovely seaside community of St. Martins. We'll explore the town a bit and stop at the St. Martins Farmers Market, a delightful place to purchase whatever your heart and tummy desire.

In St. Martins the ebb and flow of life is dictated by the world's highest tides, where the difference between high and low tide measures up to an astounding 62 feet. We will arrive at low tide when this wonder of nature provides us the unique opportunity to walk up to 40' across the ocean floor. We'll view caves normally hidden under water, dramatic cliffs and mud flats while keeping an eye out for fossils, sea glass and semi-precious stones.

Next up is lunch at a local restaurant, specializing in seafood (but with many other options as well), overlooking the Bay of Fundy and the caves. If you thought the tides were amazing, you should try the seafood chowder!

As we make our way back toward St. John, we'll visit the the City Market, the oldest farmers market in Canada. Notice the Market's unique roof line resembling the inverted keel of a ship. Take some time to browse the many vendor's offerings, everything from coffee and bakery to jewelry and photography.

A drive through the historic Trinity Royal Heritage Conservation Area will show you Victorian homes, ornate commercial buildings and beautiful churches.

Still in the Trinity Royal Heritage area, we will stop at Kings Square to admire its beautiful gardens and monuments and take a worthwhile detour to wander the Loyalist Burial Grounds. This lovely, park-like property with wrought iron gates and an impressive beaver sculpture, is the oldest cemetery in St. John and the final resting place for many American Loyalists who fled to Canada during the Revolutionary War.

We head back to the cruise ship pier with a day full of memories.
