Another name for this tour might be "From Infamous to Famous". The Meatpacking District, Chelsea Market and the Highline neighborhoods are now some of the hippest areas of the city. But it wasn't so long ago that this was not the case...

In 1900, the Meatpacking District was just that...home to more than 250 meatpacking plants. While a few still operate as such, they peacefully co-exist with their upscale restaurant, boutique and gallery neighbors who enjoy the cobblestone streets and gritty feel to the area. And don't worry, the "interesting" night clubs that were formerly quite prevalent have been replaced with more respectable places of business!

We've all heard of Chelsea. Though the area was probably not as hip and trendy as it is now, this neighborhood was still special enough to be the inspiration for Joni Mitchell's famous song, Chelsea Morning. The building that houses Chelsea Market was once home to a Nabisco factory, then converted to light manufacturing. And now it has come full circle to once again serve up global cuisine (yes, I realize a Nabisco factory is not exactly global cuisine, but work with me here). You won't soon forget a visit to High Line Park. Located on an unused section of elevated railway, this once depressing, neglected area was a prime example of urban decay. But through grand efforts of historic preservationists, High Line Park has been transformed into an oasis in the city.
