ShoreTrips says...

Nova Scotia is called "New Scotland" with good reason. This province, and especially the Sydney area, experienced strong immigration from Scotland during the 1800s. Cape Breton, in particular, is often considered to be the real 'Highland Heart' of the province with a strong connection to Scottish culture and music.

Great Scot, you're in for a great day! Departing Sydney toward the village of Baddeck, you'll pass the stunning Bras d'Or Lake, or more precisely, an inland sea comprised of part freshwater and part saltwater. Life in this area centers around the lake, which is a UNESCO world biosphere site, for its beauty and recreational and birding opportunities.

As you travel, your knowledgeable guide will relate information about the history and culture of the area.

Your tour will stop at one of three destinations, based on your ship's timing and road conditions of the day.

One of your possible stops is the lovely village of Baddeck, nestled along the shores of Bras d'Or Lake. Scotsman inventor Alexander Graham Bell had a summer home nearby and today the village is the site of the Alexander Graham Bell Museum.

Another possible stop is Colaisde na Gaidhlig, the Gaelic College. This educational non-profit institution offers year-round programming in the culture, music, language, customs, and traditions of the immigrants from the Highlands of Scotland.

Or perhaps you'll visit the Highland Village, an outdoor living history museum showcasing Nova Scotia’s Gaelic folk-life, culture, and language.

Whatever site you visit, you will come away with a new appreciation for how the residents of this area have kept Scottish culture alive, well, and close to their hearts.
