DISCOVER DC'S MONUMENTS AND MEMORIALS OF THE NATIONAL MALL
ShoreTrips says...
Your private tour guide will take you to all of these national treasures and more on this extraordinary tour.
Stretching for almost 2 miles, and bookended by the Lincoln Memorial and the US Capitol building, the National Mall is a place not just of past history, but also history in the making, as people come here to make their voices heard and where movements and celebrations happen. The iconic reflecting pool was the site of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech as well as Barack Obama's 2009 Inaugural Celebration, attended by more than 400,000 people.
The World War II Monument honors the 16 million men and women who served in the Armed Forces as well as more than 400,000 people who paid the ultimate sacrifice. With 56 granite columns surrounding a plaza and a fountain, the World War II Monument is a sobering and moving memorial.
Modeled after the Parthenon in Rome, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial reflects the significance of this Founding Father. In addition to being the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, this remarkable man also served as Secretary of State, Vice President and 3rd President of the young, democratic experiment that has become the United States.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 45th President, is the only man elected to 4 terms of office. He led the country through the challenging times of Post-Depression 1933 to the US's entry into World War II in 1941 and beyond, until his death in 1945. He came into the homes of American families through his weekly "Fireside Chats' and is the father of the Social Security program. His elegant memorial shows him proudly sitting, cane in hand, attended by his faithful Scotty dog, Fala.
