ShoreTrips says...

No trip to Alaska is complete without bear viewing. Although some bears have been spotted from ships, and even in town, it's unlikely that you'll see these sly creatures unless you travel to their home. Our success rate at spotting these awesome creatures was 90% last year!

Everyone knows that the best black bear viewing is in southeast Alaska’s "Alexander Archipelago," specifically on Prince of Wales Island...and that's exactly where we'll go!

We'll begin at Ketchikan Harbor, where you'll board our comfortable sea plane for a 30-minute flight. Your all-in-one guide/pilot will narrate and point out marine life (whales, sea lions, porpoises) you might see along the way! Keep an eye out for other wildlife such as deer, wolves, eagles, kingfishers, and other waterfowl.

Our destination is a quiet watershed where bears dig for clams, graze on shore grasses, and seasonally fish for salmon (the black bear's favorite lunch choice).

The plane will land on the water and you'll disembark the plane directly onto the beach. Depending on the exact landing location, you might need to walk in the water before reaching the beach.

Special Instructions

• The amount of walking is dependent on tides, weather and location. In extreme cases the water levels, wind and wildlife conditions at the watershed may prevent disembarking the aircraft.
• On board the seaplane, each guest will have their own viewing window and will be provided with a headset equipped with a "push to talk" intercom system to communicate with the pilot and your fellow guests.
• Air time is approximately 30 minutes each way. Time on land is approximately 30-45 minutes.
• Please note: Although bear sightings are common, they are not guaranteed. Sightings can also not be guaranteed to be close by. They are, in fact, more common at a distance. Bears are wild with keen hearing and smelling abilities. Loud noises and fragrant perfumes/smoking will reduce your chances of sightings. The pilot's narration is secondary to flight safety. Feel free to save any unanswered questions for the pilot upon landing.

• You'll be walking approximately 100 yards on an uneven, rocky, and, at times, slippery beach.
• There is a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 6 people per flight.
• There is a maximum weight limit of 275 pounds per person. You will be asked to supply each passenger's weights.
• Please be patient when awaiting your confirmation. Landing permits and space can be tough to come by. We suggest booking several months beforehand to have the best shot of getting a confirmation.
• This tour is available from June 1-October 1.
