You can expect a combination of activities in this adventure that will take you to multiple areas of fascination that one comes to Alaska to see. It is an eco-exploration as it will deliver great exercise, eagle sightings, historic totems and an old sawmill and best of all, you will be in the midst of the Tongass National Forest. The forest is the natural home to bald eagles, black bears, seals and a variety of birds. It is the salmon runs that bring this wildlife to feed and it happens every year.

To appreciate what you will see, you must have a naturalist and yours will take you on a guided hike along a trail that runs through the heart of the dense forest. You will find yourself surrounded by tall growths of hemlock, spruce and cedar and in between you will find viewing points that are strategically located for your successful gaze at nature taking care of itself.

A leisurely walk on an elevated wooden boardwalk will enable you to observe the grassy wetlands. This is where major runs of salmon return annually to spawn, and their presence calls to the bears in particular, for feeding. In this quiet setting, you should be able to hear the bird activity but it will depend on the timing and conditions in this ecosystem that control the activity.

A short walk away is the Herring Bay Lumber Company sawmill and the Alaska Raptor Center where you are likely to see a handler work with an injured bird. To really see and understand the importance of these magnificent birds and the care given to them when needed is really a fascinating scene. Just outside you can walk around and pose with the totems that sit in the courtyard, historic in their own way.

This experience delivers a nice way to stretch your legs with the best insight to show what it is like to immerse in the real Alaska. Between the lovely hike, the raptor center, the historic saw mill and the totems, you will gain so much knowledge and leave with a great memory.
