This calls for some guts, fearless folks who love the challenge of heights. And the coolest thing about this adventure is that it takes place in such a natural setting.
The scenic drive from the pier will give you time to ask your questions and build your confidence. As you get closer, your heart will begin to palpitate. And then you arrive, in the midst of a rain forest canopy so dense you can hardly see through it. This is the Tongass National Forest, the largest in the US. and it is gorgeous.

The forest holds a series of eight zip-lines with three aerial bridges suspended between tall spruce, hemlock and cedar trees. While other folks have decided to hike through these tall trees, you are going to find yourself on top of them! This major rain forest reserve is the home to one of Alaska's richest salmon spawning streams. It also has a pristine intertidal estuary, where the ocean meets the land between high and low tides. All of this calls to the wildlife in the forest and as the salmon begin their upstream run, all kinds of animals find their way to the water to feed. From mid-July through much of September you can expect to see lots of bald eagles, black bears and other hungry animals.

At Herring Cove you best be ready to board an all-terrain custom 4x4 Unimog that will transport you up a steep rainforest hillside to the canopy chalet. You will find the guides well trained and professional as they guide you through the orientation before you mount the first platform. Only the best equipment is used and you will feel like you are flying over the ziplines as you are eased into the forest canopy challenge, which ranges from a short 100 feet up to 750 feet. Eagles and bears are often sighted from the platforms - images you will have to remember as you breeze through the forest.

The 3 hanging bridges deliver breathtaking views of the forest below. At this point you will be 135 feet above the forest floor. You will definitely feel immersed in the sights and the sounds of the rain forest wildlife preserve and there is a comfort to that. The last zip-line brings you out of the rain forest and transports you over the carpet of grassy wetlands to a viewing tower 55 feet above the ground. It is here that you will take your last thrill ride, a rappelling to the ground.

If you are able to stand after all this and there is enough time left, you can explore the totem park and the historic sawmill you saw from above. Check out the Alaska Raptor Center where you might see a handler or perhaps you will see a blacksmith at work.

Pat yourself on the back for having the guts to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime adventure and maybe you will find something significant in the General Store that will bring you back to this day forever.
