Half of the country's population lives in Montevideo. It is often thought of as the “little sister” to Buenos Aires. While both cities share similar cultures, delicious cuisine, intriguing history, and of course, the Rio de la Plata, Montevideo encapsulates a more tranquil, low-key vibe and is appealing to the younger folk. As you make your way through the city, particularly the Old Town, you will feel that sense of calm.

You will immediately head to that Old Town to see the monument of the Graf Spee, representing a battle between the British and the Germans. The ship sunk nearby and is still partially visible. Constitution Square will follow and there you will learn about the Montevideo Cathedral and Colonial Town Hall. Independence Square houses the monument to José Gervasio Artigas Arnal, a national hero of Uruguay, sometimes called "the father of Uruguayan nationhood". His mausoleum is also nearby. And just nearby Plaza Independencia is the Solís Theatre, Uruguay's most important and renowned theatre. It opened in 1856.

Facing the square is the Government House, also known as the Museum of the Presidents. The main commercial street 18 de Julio is lined with shops, cafés and office buildings and is usually quite lively, especially in the evening.

A huge source of pride is the Congress Building which was constructed between 1908 and 1925. The builders used local marble of 52 colors and 12 types of wood to create this building, still a draw for all visitors including the locals coming into Montevideo. Inside visits are only possible on week days depending on Parliament activities so a promise to enter is never a sure thing.

And then there are the parks, which this city has created and maintained for the people. Passing by the Prado neighborhood, one of the oldest parks in the city where you will see the famous sculpture La Diligencia (The Stage Coach), as well as the Monument to the last Charruas Indians. Prado Park, which is known for its historical monuments, also has lush gardens and a stunning display of roses. You will have a little time to spend lingering around the Prado Hotel as well.

We need not say that one of the most important public facility is the Soccer Stadium, which is near the residential area of Carrasco, where you will get a glimpse of what we might call 'the suburbs'.

One more stop at the Plaza Virgilio to see the monument dedicated to the Fallen Soldiers of the Navy will not only be inspirational but deliver one of the best views of the city.

Your return back to where you started is lovely as you will take the coastal road with its beaches in full view.
