ShoreTrips says...

Punta Arenas, founded in 1848 at the shores of the Magellan Strait, is a town with "European" character.

Depart from the cruise ship pier and begin your tour through the city of Punta Arenas. Enjoy a scenic drive to the Plaza de Armas (Main Square) where you’ll see the immense statue of a Patagonian native and Fernando Magellan. From here you’ll travel to Cerro la Cruz viewpoint that overlooks the city, the Strait of Magellan, the Port, and the legendary Tierra del Fuego Island.

Next, you’ll visit the Maggiorino Borgatello Museum, founded by the Salesian missionaries, for a comprehensive overview of the regional flora and fauna, regional indigenous peoples and regional history. The next stop is the “Museo del Recuerdo” (Museum of Memories) located on the grounds of the Patagonian Institute, the research center of the University of Magallanes. This open-air museum has antique trains, machinery and relics of the European settlers in this remote part of the world.

As you head back towards town, you’ll pass a pioneer cemetery lined by tall cypress trees and splendid mausoleums. A solemn tombstone indicates the place where the last of the now-extinct Ona natives are buried.

On your way back to the pier you will view the Plaza de Armas Square and the statue of Magellan, with a mermaid and two Fuegian Indians at his feet.

Discover the charm of Chile’s largest southernmost city, Punta Arenas.
